Either the instructions are wrong, or you misunderstood
them.  The "app passwrod" is the passowrd your client should
be using all the time. Quote the relevant fragment from 
the Yahoo guide, if you care to.

By checking it manually, with Ctrl+I or the /Get/ button on
the account being tested.  Do not check your Yahoo mailbox
until we have made sure /all/ of your connection and
authentication settings are correct.

Yes, I understood as much.  My conjecture is that these errors
may be related, so avoiding repeated login attempts over either
protocol will not hurt.
