If you can put it where it belongs, trying to implement auto update is probably a mistake. A program that allows choice of where to install it, should also allow a choice of where to put data files. I personally put as few program files/data files on C: as I can, because I know from past experience that these files will be at risk to loss and corruption. Put them on another hard disk, then no matter what happens with the os, your program files are safer. Then monitor that new hard disk for signs of failure. I keep a hard disk in reserve to transfer to when signs of failure appear.
