So what's wrong with a simple popup "hey, I found a new version, want
me to download the MSI now?" and "Ok, I put it in your downloads
folder, remember to execute it".

You don't need any special "autoupdate-version" to do that, and it
would be way easier to program than the current, somewhat convoluted
handling.
