Why does "importing messages" take 20 minutes?

What exactly is TB doing when the Connection Centre says "Importing
messages," and why does it take 20 minutes?  Whenever it's doing this,
clicking on many folders (any folders with recent messages) produces an
address violation.  I'm starting to get tired of this.
