Slimming Down the database / Archiving

Hello Everyone,

my TB has grown over the years and the backup files are now more than 
 gb in size.
I would like to tidy up a bit without messing up everything.

My idea is to create new Archive folders and then moving older emails into these archive folders. 
Can I then remove these completely to a different harddrive/backup storage in case I ever need them again? 
Currently my mail directory is at on my OS drive at %APPDATA%\The Bat!\
