If you click on the words "English (American)" at the bottom of the window you'll see a list of languages come up, with a check mark against English (American). 

If you uncheck that and click on another language (or no language at all), you'll find that all your correctly spelled English words will be underlined.

What probably happened is that you intended to click on the Priority box next to it but accidentally clicked on the language box and changed the language or left it as "no language".
