It doesn't work that way here. If I click on "English (American)" and un-tick
that selection (it now says "no language"), *nothing* is ever misspelled. Not even
random characters such as dhgrf. But if I set it back to "English (American)" my
random characters are immediately underlined in red.

There may be some confusion in our correspondence because it works differently
depending on whether you're composing a reply, such as this, or a new message.
Everything I stated in the above paragraph is true for this message, but this is
a reply. In a new message everything now seems to work as you describe.

Anyway, I appreciate your efforts but whatever was wrong in the beginning seems
to have gone away.

Thanks again.
