Thomas, I think I have now really messed up. Thinking my path was incorrect, I amended this under options/preferences/mail directory but realise now that it seems all accounts and not just the archive account are being stored on the external drive now. That's not what I had in mind. I forgot how I had done this originally. My active database with recent emails going back 2 years should be on my C-drive and only those in the special Archive folder should be on the external drive. Is it the home directory under Account/Properties/Files & Directories that I should have adjusted?
