Use Plain Text Viewer?

Is this choice on the VIEW menu supposed to do anything any more?

I'm occasionally receiving emails from an Outlook user that crash TB!'s HTML viewer and today I remembered that I could switch to plain text viewing, so I tried it.

Nothing changed.  Not. One. Single. Thing.  Except that the little image next to the menu item was rendered with a different background color, seeming to indicate that either the new or old color meant the item was selected.

But, in either state, all of the messages I sampled still showed all of the fonts, colors and formatting that I associate with fully formatted HTML email.  By that I mean that the messages had MULTIPLE fonts, MULTIPLE colors, MULTIPLE styles, and formatting like lists and indents, etc.  None of which I expect once the formatting is stripped out.

So, I ask again... is "Use Plain Text Viewer" implemented as anything other than a menu selection that shows whether you selected it or not but nothing else?  If so, is there some configuration option that somehow overrides it?  If there is, that seems like a mistake, since the plain text viewer should ALWAYS be a plain text viewer, for security and stability if no other reason.
