You will need to reapply the patch each time you upgrade perl. I had a similar issue with Maia upgrades for a while, back when it used the deprecated PHP session_is_registered call -- had to reapply a patch after each upgrade. Also, at least on my system, the first time I applied the patch Maia then complained that the system had no threads module installed.
