I haven't looked at the Maia code for some time, but have had to move
some projects from PHP 5.6 to 7.x. Of course, depending on the value of
x, the answer changes. PHP 7.x has changed, more or less significantly,
from PHP 5.6. Most likely, what is happening to you is that there are
errors being reported, internally, but PHP 7, but they are being hidden
from you. These errors are changes in the language causing syntax
errors and such in Maia.

A project to update the Maia code from PHP 5 has been discussed at
least a couple of times, but, as far as I know, never been completed, if
even actually started.

If you wanted to take that on, there are several of us who would be VERY
grateful. Some of us might even be willing to assist.
