"Incorrect string value"

Trying to finish Maia install on a Ubuntu 22.04 server, with 
mariadb-server-10.6 .  Mail generally is working except for occasional 
mail with (looks like) UTF in subject line... which is throwing error:

Jan  1 20:00:51 zeus maiad[25275]: (25275-02) TROUBLE in check_mail: 
spam_scan FAILED: DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Incorrect string value: 
'\\xF0\\x9F\\x8E\\x86 2...' for column `maia`.`maia_mail`.`subject` at 
row 1 at /var/lib/maia/maiad line 3841, <GEN22> line 897.

I've retried remaking the maia_mail table per the mysql SQL, with the 
character set and collating sequence, to no avail.  Is there an issue 
using MariaDB, or can this be fixed?  Any suggestions?
