IMHO 99% of these errors are cosmetic and don't affect the ability of the
code to run under php 8.

I've started with configtest.php, and made some progress in getting it to
run, but I ran into a roadblock with MDB2, which is incompatible with php
8, and will have to be migrated to PDO.

I'm encouraged to find that the string 'MDB2' appears in only 5 of the 902
files, so that's a bit more manageable than I initially thought.

So, the current issue is clear: convert the MDB2 code to use PDO, and then
we'll see what things look like at that point.
