It's not at all necessary to stay on php. Sure, it could be done with any
number of javascript libraries. One of the original maia developers has
even mentioned ruby on rails.

There's nothing stopping anyone from forking a new branch, getting rid of
php, and building a new web framework with something else.

But in the meantime, given my shortage of bandwidth amid current
commitments, it makes sense to me to try to salvage this excellent antispam
solution by patching up the php code to keep going a little longer.
