BTW I noticed this, which should be updated:

Please note that Maia Mailguard no longer supports "mysql" but has
moved forward to using "mysqli" instead. So, please check your
/usr/local/www/maia-mailguard/config.php file and make any appropriate 
changes.


 From what I understand, the big change was from PEAR:MDB2:mysqli to PDO 
and php-mysql
