Problems with authentification after install

I am doing a fresh install on a Fedora machine following the 
instructions step by step at qmailrocks.com. However Im stuck at step 
6, where it is supposed to ask me for username/password using 
htaccess-file I created. This is not working properly which generates a 
blue screen (not a windows one though ;-) ) saying:
"Authentication Failed Username unknown
vQadmin was unable to determine your username, which
means your webserver is improperly configured to run
with this CGI.  For security reasons, this script
will not run without Apache htaccess lists."

I have redone and retiried creating the htaccess several times with not 
improvment. I also have managed to enable authentification on other 
sites running on the same server. I understand this has nothing to do 
with the instructions on qmailrocks or the application vqadmin, but 
still this is the most appropriate forum to get help I hope since I am 
trying to get vqadmin to work.

Could there maybe be a problem in the configuration of the cgi-bin 
directory?
