I have modified a little bit your emacs lisp snippet:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(let* ((folder ".~/Maildir-gm/garbage")
       (elmo-folder (wl-folder-get-elmo-folder folder))
       (unread (cadr (elmo-list-diff
		      (elmo-folder-list-messages elmo-folder t t)
		      ;; Probably files in "new" directory are moved
		      ;; into "cur" directory
		      (elmo-folder-list-messages elmo-folder t nil))))
       (msgdb (elmo-folder-msgdb-create elmo-folder unread nil))
       result)
  (pp elmo-folder) ; shows value
  (pp unread); unread is nil; this is a Maildir folder from gmail
  (elmo-folder-msgdb-create elmo-folder unread nil)
  (dolist (number (elmo-msgdb-list-messages msgdb))
    (setq result (cons (elmo-msgdb-overview-entity-get-subject
			(elmo-msgdb-message-entity msgdb number))
		       result)))
  result)
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

As You can see unread is not filled. Any idea about the cause?

this is part of wl "Folder" buffer:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
       garbage:1/126/150
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

and also this is part of my dot folders file:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
.~/Maildir-gm/garbage     "garbage"
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
