problems reading mail with mime parts

Hi.  I am having a problem reading mail if it has mime parts.  I get
the message symbols definition as variable is void w3-mode-map.  I
install w3m even though I don't use w3 and even put (require
'mime-w3m) but no joy.

I hope you can help me as I cannot read most of my emails because most
of them have html parts or some such.
