No, I just added it.

But for some reason the display was limited to 500 messages before I
changed it. I may have done several changes around the same time, but
the "wl-expire-alist" is the only one that seemed relevant.

The manual seemed to suggest 500 was the default.

I never entered 500 myself anywhere, or clicked yes when asked, or
anything.
