After a couple of seconds xmail will start using the new information (it does take a little bit of time, so don't pannic if after half a second things haven't changed). For the indexed files: it's best to edit them through the CTRL-interface (either socket or command line). In that case there is no need to reload XMailserver to load the new configuration.
