No POP3 uses SSL and SMTP uses STARTTLS (confusingly also called SSL ^_^ .)

I am currently using OperaM2 > Zoe > Gmail with no problems. I just used  
the information on  
http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13287 and it worked  
with no issues occuring. Just needed to setup another account for Gmail in  
M2 with the Gmail account information (but still goes through Zoe) that  
does not check the server (since my main account already checks Zoe.) One  
issue in M2 (so not a Zoe problem) is that when replying to an email from  
Gmail account, there is no automatic change to gmail address in the From  
field.

Since I have no problems the only thing I can recommend is making sure you  
have the latest version of Zoe and making sure the ports in  
http://127.0.0.1:10080/preferences/assistants/configuration/ SSL section  
are correct. If those are updated/correct I would concentrate my efforts  
on Popfile since I am not using that and mine is working.
