I think that the reason that there are no discussions on this group is
due to the fact that 4ad has a message board. All of the discussions that
in the past have taken place on lists such as this have migrated to the
message board. I check both of them frequently but just to maybe "liven
up" this group, I'll post my response here:
I'm not going to put my top albums in any kind of order because I think
that it would be impossible. I'm just going to jump right in...
Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun
This album is in my opinion the best album by Dead Can Dance. (Although
there isn't a DCD album that I do not like) I think that this one strikes
a perfect balance between Brenden and Lisa's voices. I also love the fact
that they used an actual orchestra instead of sythesizers on this album. I
can listen to it over and over (especially "Anywhere Out of This World")
Cocteau Twins - Victorialand
Cocteau Twins purists will argue that this isn't a proper Cocteau Twins
album because all of the members were not present, but it is one of my
favorites. No real "hits" on this album but it flows so well. It also
reminds me of fun times long lost...
Clan Of Xymox - Medusa
When this album was released I thought that I had found the perfect
album. I literally wore out the vinyl on my first purchase. This was the
true "Golden Age" of 4ad in my opinion.
This Mortal Coil - First two
I lumped these two albums together because when I listen to one of them,
I invariably listen to the other. These two albums are timeless. I put
them on the other day and thought that they still do not sound
dated. "Blood" in my opinion was one of the worst 4ad releases.
Heidi Berry - Love
No one ever mentions Heidi Berry in their top lists, but I think
that "Love" is one of the best 4ad albums. Her later albums are o.k., but
I could listen to "Love" over and over. The songs flow extremely well.
I'm not saying that there aren't other wonderful albums on 4ad, but this is
my list of favorites. I enjoyed reading your favorite list. If you liked
Scheer's "Infliction" you need to check out "...and Finally". It was the
album that 4ad was going to release but didn't. I think that you can still
get it from www.schismrecords.com. Mine came with the 4ad logo still on
the artwork! I think that it might be better than "Infliction".
I've also seen some great 4ad shows over the years:
His Name Is Alive - Mouth by Mouth tour
Ultra Vivid Scene - twice. Met Kurt Ralske both times. The first time got
to go back stage and hang out with the band. Went to breakfast with the
bassist
Pale Saints/Lisa Germano - Club misprinted the date of the show on the
tickets and flyers so there were only about 30-40 people there. It was
like having a personal concert. Got to meet both bands.
Lush/Mojave 3/Scheer - Shaving the Pavement tour. Got to hang out with
Rachael from Mojave 3. Met all the members of Lush (including now-deceased
Chris Ackland)
Dead Can Dance - 1990 Tour in Los Angeles. Also had tickets to cancelled
Salt Lake City show months before the breakup.
Red House Painters - twice. Turns out an old girlfriend of mine is REALLY
good friends with Mark Kozelek
The Wolfgang Press - twice. First show had a power outage. They did an
acapella version of "Pale Blue Eyes" while trying to get the problem fixed.
The Glee Club - One of the best small shows ever. Got to meet the band.
They were a lot of fun!
The Breeders - Halloween. Got to see Kim Deal dressed in a "Star Trek"
costume.
Kristin Hersh - twice. Got to meet her, her husband, and her two kids.
Great shows!
Bauhaus - Last tour. They did a cover of Dead Can Dance's "Severance"
The Pixies - First tour. They rocked!!!!
Clan of Xymox - twice. The "Twist Of Shadows" tour was excellent (although
cut short because of drunken frat boys throwing cigarettes at the band.
Cocteau Twins - They are pretty boring live, but I love their music!
Modern English - Several times. I think that there is only one original
member left...
The Paladins - Don't know why they ever ended up on 4ad, but they are GOOD
musicians. Great live!
I guess I'm running longer than you Russell. Sorry! Anybody else have an
opinion?
