Hinterland will be playing at Vancouver's Railway Club on July 2 with In Medias Res, one of the city's best unknown bands. (See www.imr.ca/.) Our connection with these guys is that we recorded our album at the same studio with the same producer. We are mastering our album next week, but we still haven't found a label interested in putting it outÂ… so who knows what's going to happen with it. In any case, we will put a couple of stream= ing tracks on our mp3 page when the mastering is done. With our album basically finished, it feels weird to still be getting revie= ws of the three-song demo/EP we recorded in 2001, but this was posted recently on= the Losing Today site: "Hinterland `Destroy destroyer' (Hinterland Demo). Some people have all the= luck, not content to be blessed with having being part of the much missed Electrosonics whose glorious `Neutron Lullaby' featured to a jaw dropping welcoming in these very pages, Michaela Galloway has now hooked up as part of the Vancouver five piece Hinterland who bear down with equal creative tenacity. This three track CD was only meant to act as a demo to l= et the world know they were around, such was its acclaim it's been circulating= around a fair few retail outlets for a while now with their debut album exp= ected any day. The first thing you notice aside the clever thought out mix of dri= ving rockisms splintered with wide screen ambient textures and post rock stop starts are the enchanting vocals of Michaela Galloway sounding not unlike those of Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins and Harriet Wheeler of the Sundays= to the obvious ear and on closer attention reminiscent of a certain Kate Bu= sh especially with regard to the way she can move up and down the scales without any hint of difficulty. It's difficult trying to pick a favourite f= rom the bunch, `Destroy destroyer' is resplendent with its corkscrew bass line that= threatens to burrow away into the psyche, while the guitars pensively drive= space wards. `This condition' which has, apparently been dropped from the bands live set, is streaming with delicate fluffily picked chords that carv= e out guide lines in an attempt to keep check on Michaela's wandering vocal dynamics which flirt seductively with the textured melodies beneath. `Keep = the Aspidistra flying' closes the set in fine style, starting out dreamily as a= flute flutters gracefully with the sounds of a stylophone ultimately flourishing = into a delightfully refreshing pastoral slow burner, tranquil, alluring and above = all enchanting. Needless to say you have to track it down." Wow. I'm not sure what all of that means, but my thanks to Mark Barton regardless! We also have another show coming up on August 28, at the Royal in Vancouver. That one's with San Diego's Waterline Drift... but more about th= at as the date draws closer.
