HNIA related: brown rice

hey

this is my first post here... im a huge 4AD fan in general, but 
especially HNIA... i guess the livonia list is dead so i'll start 
lurking/posting here. anyway, someone on the pitchfork board posted 
this and it looks like good news...

brown rice starts to set up. im excited cause i love warns stuff but 
hesistant cause i know it's probably some weird eastern-influenced 
free jam thing that i wont like. well, they set up and it's keys, 
drums, a megaphone (??), a fucking huge harp and warns guitars. they 
harp girl starts out doing some wanky stuff and then everyone but 
warns joins in. warn walks around in the audience with sleigh bells. 
well, whatever, it wasnt what i was hoping but it's ok. then warn 
gets on stage and picks up his guitar and starts rocking out. and 
then the drummer falls into a steady beat and the rest fall into 
place and then...erika hoffman gets on stage!!! i thought she was 
just there for the slgtm show. so, she starts singing, and it's 
lyrics from happy blues played in stars on esp/ft. lake era superjam 
style!! except with a harp! so im totally stoked and then the song 
ends..and warn starts playing country girl!! oh shit, i almost died. 
ive been pissed at myself for never seeing pre-lovetta hnia for 
years. next songs is a absolutely perfect wonderful mix of the verses 
from "fossil" and the chorus from "rock n roll girl from rock n roll 
city." and this is when i knew it, old school hnia was back!! ive 
always kinda thought that the last two hnia albums were not really 
hnia. someday was pretty much warn paying back lovetta for helping 
him out by giving her a widely released album (i think by this point 
he was already having trouble w/ 4ad and didnt really give a fuck 
what happened). last night was just warn shitting out another record 
before leaving the label (i mean it was just a bunch of practice 
sessions from the "someday.." tour). not that they're bad albums, or 
that they dont have a distinct hnia feel, but...anyway, brown rice 
really seems like the more logical continuation of hnia after ft. 
lake. 1/2 the line-up was old-school hnia, with warn, erika and dion 
fischer on bass. the other dudes might have been too but i didnt 
recognize them. anyway, the finished the song and then played 
something new!! so im hoping for an album. after that they played 
cinnamon sound system from the friendly science 7"!! i thought that 
was just a one off, i never figured they would ever play it live. 
anyway they pulled it off great (it's a reggae dub track) and i was 
dying of happiness. followed it with "wish i had a wishing ring" and 
then another new song (which was *excellent*) and ended way too soon. 
short set, but i dont care. im just thrilled to see my favorite era 
of hnia back.
