Happy Birthday Nick Cave

Mr. Nick Cave

My first intention in writting this letter is to greet you in this nice 
occasion. I also hope that your beloved Sussie and your kid are ok. Besides, 
I want to extend this feeling to all you friends, musicians in past and 
present bands, past and present labelmates (From 4AD to Mute, etc) and 
people who follow your career in any place from this world.

Let me tell you that its a rainy day in my city. Maybe you will never come 
in here and give a show, but for some practical information I live in a city 
with 8 million people. Maybe its not so attractive as other places you´ve 
been playing in the last years, but I enjoy it. Sometimes I think if this is 
the place I deserve to live or if there´s another place waiting for me. But 
nevermind, those are just the usual love-hate dilemmas of living wherever 
you are. I know this happens everyday and wherever you are.

I´ve been listening to your music for more than ten years. I remember those 
early days when I started searching for your music in here and people were 
not used to it. Or the days when I first started searching webpages about 
you until I was able to reach the 4AD and Goodson lists. These years I´ve 
noticed how your music has become an important part of my life. I mean, 
listening to your records has become something I really live and enjoy, even 
if some lyrics are so hard to understand in one has not lived any 
approximation to them.

On this occasion, I want to share some experiences that have some (in)direct 
relation with you.

One of them has to be with a trip I made to France and Germany last January.

Via the Goodson List, I was able to stay for about five days in the city 
where you lived for more than three years in the eighties. Berlin. Yeah, I 
stayed there and I felt lots of things trying to figure out how you felt 
when you recorded your albums in there and wrote your novel and some lyrics.
It was the first time in my life where I was able to see and feel the snow, 
believe me. I had to carry out sweaters and coats to warm up myself. The 
streets had snow, I felt something between happiness and melancholy.
I was really eager to see the things you used to see in there, buildings, 
houses, parks, stores, everything was so important for me, I felt like a 
child discovering all types of things in there. Berlin had the atmosphere of 
a city with such vivid emotions. I tried to make up in my mind the stories 
I´ve read about you in there. Not also that, but how were those gigs and the 
times you shared with Blixa, Die Haut and Crime and The City Solution, as 
well as Tuxedomoon.

I was there, walking the streets and trying to think about your life. How on 
earth were you able to be influenced by that city, living it according to 
your dreams and how you felt it. Being in there, with the people in your 
band. I tried to search for any rarities os special recordings but had no 
luck. I also tried to trace the works from people like Die Haut and 
Nebauten, as well as Crime and The City Solution´s “Shine” album, which a 
friend in here damaged my copy and I have not listened it in more than two 
years.

But if I had no luck getting copies from those cds, I was really happy to 
meet personally a Goodson list member. It was Louis Trumpbour an american 
fellow who enabled me to be in his place when I was there. I definitely 
think It was something so great.!!!!!! Besides I was able to get a copy from 
your Nocturama release and it was a limited edition!!!!!!!!! I ´m just 
waiting to have a DVD Player to see it.

I was really happy to visit Berlin and felt somehow nearer to much of the 
things you lived in there: the atmosphere, the people, the air, etc..felt so 
inspiring......

But If I was able to be in Berlin and there I was able to experience the 
city, the nearest place where I was able to see you was Paris. Well, I mean, 
you were not playing live there at the time I was in there, but on a metro 
station I was astonished to see a giant poster announcing Nocturama. It was 
so beautiful and so nice. I had to take a picture of it, because that was 
the most near memory I would have of a place where you´ve been. I was 
walking in there and I saw the poster. There you were, with your band and 
friends. Just there, people passing by, people who noticed you for about a 
second or so, and there was I, watching this poster, side to side, inch by 
inch, and figuring out what has behind it. I stayed there for more than ten 
minutes, just for the pleasure it.

Another day in Paris, I also saw some of your cds on the 4AD – Birthday 
Party era and some of the ones from Die Haut which I was not able to find in 
Berlin, but there were so expensive.......I just has one relief....I thought 
that the people who pay such high price for those records, really know what 
they are getting. And if someone do pays for it, really wants it.

And last, but not least, since I really wonder what may your live show 
consists of, I may say I did “assist” to a concert from your last tour, 
precisely in London. A friend of mine who lives in there and knows my 
passion for your music phoned me and put me your show just for me on the 
phone!!!!!!!!! He was there, on the sixth row and described me each 
song!!!!! It will always be so thankful with him.

So Mr Nick Cave, maybe you´ll never have the chance to read this letter, but 
I was not to going to miss the opportunity to wish a Happy Birthday to and 
telling you that you and your band and bandmates have made my life bearable 
in these last years.
