My apartment got broken into shortly after I moved in, the insurance was mostly good (except for money to replace my two film SLRs not being enough to even buy a cheap dSLR at the time, 2005). Despite them raising my premiums, I calculated that over my 4.5 years in the apartment, I still payed less overall then they had actually paid out to me in my one claim. Then they didn't even give me a quote when I bought my house, so I switched to a different provider. Despite that relatively positive experience, I have zero respect for auto insurance and various other types. Now, back to fires, according to some program on the History channel years ago, the insurance racket is actually why fire departments were made public in the first place. At one point there were competing private fire departments, only putting out fires for their customers and supposedly starting fires for customers of competitors. Stories like that and this recent incident enforce my view that it should be a mandatory public service. As for the $75 going up if it was mandatory or collected by other means, unfortunately that sounds likely given government bureaucracy, but it doesn't have to cost more.
