The principle is not that they shouldn't have fired him (or at least
reprimanded him and publicly distanced themselves from his comments).
It might be that they should reprimand or fire others who have
henceforth escaped their institutional bias.  And I say this not
merely because they get some of their funding from taxes, but because
it would be more in line with their stated journalistic intentions.

You'll get no disagreement from me on that point, and I'll expand it
to funding media of any bias or of no bias (if such a thing is
possible), especially at the federal level.  I have slightly less
qualms about states or municipalities funneling some of their tax
proceeds (or tax breaks) towards media, if they deem it in their
interest to do so to do so.
