Of course, this all ignores the polls and research that suggests Republicans are likely to gain an edge-even a majority...but nothing like originally thought (it used to be a belief that it would be well over a hundred-now optimism is 50 or even less). It also ignores that a few months ago when the expectation for some states elections were "it's bad to be an incumbent!" and then all but one incumbent won. I don't doubt the Republicans will get the majority next week...but that this will be some sort of incredible "thumping" seems far more up in the air.

In a week, Americans go to the polls. But it might as well be happening today.
For -- barring major news events or extraordinarily damaging revelations about
individual candidates that cause probable voters to rethink their choices in
unprecedented fashion -- the 2010 cake is baked, it's out of the oven and it's
cooling in an undisclosed location.
