I'm leery of calling what I do a "sacrifice", much less a "noble" one, but "pragmatic" is certainly right. My wife has a unionized job with a pretty good extended health benefits plan, etc. etc., and she was making about twice as much at that job as I was with my freelance writing. It just seemed natural to *both* of us that I should be the one to stay home with the kids, once she had finished her year of maternity leave. (Plus, for the first few years at least, a fair bit of the work that I did was work that I could do from home anyway, though I often worked on it 'til three in the morning because I had to wait until the kids were in bed.) Plus, for whatever it's worth, I think I'm a little more organized than my wife (which is not to say that *things* are necessarily more organized around here... what I mean is that I compartmentalize better, in all senses of the word, both pro and con), and the fact that I stay home with the kids has been helpful, in this regard, as I juggle the schedules of our son's autism-therapy workers and fill out all the various bits of paperwork that are needed by the preschool, the government, the health-insurance company, etc., etc., etc. (Side note: a few years ago, my wife and I were going through a stack of her papers, and we found a few tax-rebate cheques that had expired months earlier. It boggled my mind, because the moment *I* get a cheque, I stick it in my wallet because *you never know* when you might happen to walk past an ATM next...) -- dadl-ot mailing list http://mail.thehood.us/mailman/listinfo/dadl-ot_thehood.us http://news.gmane.org/gmane.music.dadl.ot
