Back when I was traveling, one day I had contracted food poisoning or something and called in sick. I had put the DND sign on my hotel room door and was so sick I thought I was going to die. I wondered then if I died, how long it would be before anyone found me and noticed. I'm thinking at least 2-3 days. Also, when I was travelling in Russia, I had taken an excursion to a remote hermitage on an island in the middle of nowhere. I was in a tiny soviet era wooden boat with patched holes and a shady looking captain who brought gasoline with him in milk jugs, no lifejackets, nothing. We were in such a remote area and in the middle of a gigantic lake, that if we went down I'm sure it would have been weeks or months before anyone figured something out and our bodies likely would have never been found. But I have found, it is good every now and then to be reminded of one's own mortality. Ironically, at that very hermitage I visited on that tiny island, there was an open grave. The current lone hermit monk there told us that the hermitage's founder, a 15th century monk (St. Alexander of Svir) had dug his own grave there to remind him of his own mortality, lest he get too prideful. regards, -Lance -- dadl-ot mailing list http://mail.thehood.us/mailman/listinfo/dadl-ot_thehood.us http://news.gmane.org/gmane.music.dadl.ot
