The harm caused by the punch often reveals the intent behind the punch.  So 
bloodying a nose and knocking someone out cold could legitimately result in 
different charges.  


I'm also not talking about sentencing considerations.  Different factors are and 
should be taken into account at that point.

As I'm typing these I realize they made sound like distinctions without a 
difference but I don't believe they are.

So, you do not think there is a difference between an out of shape guy like me 
punching someone in the face and MAYBE giving them a bloody nose and a soldier 
striking someone in the face and knocking them unconcious?  Although, i suppose 
it is the end result that determines what the crime is.
