Going forward, I would have liked to see River simply disappear. The pilot
episode makes it clear that she was an interloper, never really a part of
the crew. Once she finally becomes an integrated member of the crew, her
character arc is over, and (ironically) that is the perfect time to send her
on her way. She's finally right in the head head now and doesn't need the
crew any longer. I'd prefer to know she's out there creating trouble for the
Alliance on her own, like a Ranger. But I don't need to see her with
Serenity anymore.

If we have to go forward without Book and Wash, I'd prefer to also let Zoe
step off to the side on some planet somewhere and try to get a handle on
life without Wash. That leaves us four short. They /have/ to get more
characters. I could see a hotshot pilot who is so good Mal has to work with
them. And I could also see that person being female, maybe a Starbuck-like
hotshot. I could also see another theist of some sort.

I'd like to see them take the fight to Blue Sun. There's a lot going on
there that was never resolved, and I suspect it affects Inara. (To answer
your question, Karl, there's a place where Mal says something like 'I don't
want to die today,' and Inara mutters 'I don't want to die at /all.' Paul
knows more about that rumor than I do, but it's a fascinating plot point
that Joss hasn't developed yet. There is a large mystery about Inara that
hasn't been uncovered yet.

I could see Kylie and the Doc becoming the new hot married couple (although
much of Kaylee's charm was her yearning).

By Mal losing Book and Zoe (and, to a lesser extent, Wash), he becomes far
more alone, and more bitter, more demanding, more brooding. He's had so many
great people to lean on that he doesn't know just how much he needs others.
I could see a steady stream of people coming and going for awhile while he
tries to figure out how to run the ship and the defacto family with new
people. It's a part of life, and Mal would need to wrestle with it. Just
because we can't see that future doesn't mean it's not the most likely
future.

It's clear they need a new menace to fight. Does he organize a new
revolution? Does somebody and want him to join in a 'you're with us or
against us' kind of way. Is there a new menace on a more Galactic scale?
Interlopers who threaten the Alliance forcing Mal into the uncomfortable
place of working with his former enemies?
