I always got the idea that Book was a reformed very bad dude.  He was trying to 
leave behind a bad past and was torn between believing in his shepherding thing 
or cynically using it as a cover.

Right, and he doesn't seem the sort of guy who would carry around
guilt, so having her gone wouldn't affect him.

At least, not that she would have
been someone to protect any more than anyone else. Also, there's that
interesting bit in "Objects in Space," where River reads his mind, and
he says something like, "I don't give half a hump whether you're
innocent or not, so where does that leave you?" Was he thinking about
River in that moment?

Nah, remember in "War Stories," Kaylee and River playing and running
around the ship? "No power in the verse can stop me." They seemed to
have a fairly friendly relationship already at that point, probably
from being the only two young girls on board.

I see this in the film, but I'm not sure I see it in the series.

Which is exactly why he might just go batty after her death. Heck,
wouldn't it have been something to see him morphing into something
more more mercenary and soulless like Jayne, much to Jayne's
discomfort and Kaylee's dismay?  Instead of him being River's tenuous
link to normality, Kaylee could become his.  :)

I don't think so. Yes, he let the Alliance guy out of his holding
cell, but he also stepped up and took a pretty strong hand during the
face off.

I did, too. I also always felt like we would probably see the return
of the two-faced Captain from "Out of Gas," and the murderous organ
trafficker from "The Messenger."

**yes.  They did have a few people come back, like Niska, Saffron and Badger,
but so many more could have.



  Neither was a particularly great
character, but they both lived to carry a grudge. And, of course, I
was a little disappointed that we didn't get to see Badger in the
big-screen outing. He was probably my favorite recurring character
(Hendricks' beauty notwithstanding).
