MAME is an acronym for a software solution that allows one to play multiple
classic old arcade videogames on a computer (or, in some cases, other
handheld devices like smartphones or iPods). Think of it as a project by
enthusiasts to keep alive the venerable videogames we loved as kids. (I
loved the Star Trek game, where iirc, the Enterprise was a blue dot and the
Klingons were a red dot.)

MAME stands for *M*ultiple *A*rcade *M*achine *E*mulator. When used in
conjunction with images of the original arcade game's ROM and disk data,
MAME attempts to reproduce that game as faithfully as possible on a more
modern general-purpose computer. MAME can currently emulate several thousand
different classic arcade video games from the late 1970s through the modern
era.
