So, I watched Alien and Aliens on Blu-Ray today.  They looked great.

Can I just say that I kind of had forgotten how near perfect the storytelling is
in Aliens?  When we meet the Colonial Marines, we basically understand their
personalities within about two minutes (Drake and Vasquez are a tight team unto
themselves, Hudson is a loudmouth, Hick is even tempered and phased by little).
We are shown simple things that might not seem important at the time, but
clearly are needed to establish something as straightforward as Ripley really
knows how to use the loader effectively.  And so on.

I also forgot that I found Newt pretty endearing throughout the film.  One of
those child characters that had an odd precociousness that works.

But what also stood out?  The finale... uh, has anyone else noticed that the
Queen getting on the ship is basically the fault of Ripley?  If she had just
taken Newt and ran?  Queen gets incinerated.  But nooooo... Ripley starts laying
down fire, shooting grenades and lobbing explosives...and it is her final batch
of explosives that knocks the queen to the ground allowing her to break free of
the egg sack.  Then she hit's both elevator buttons, even after one of them is
on it's way.  So the queen gets in the other elevator Ripley called down.  If
Ripley would have ducked out sooner with Newt?  The ship would have likely had
trouble flying off-but then the Queen would have still been sitting with her
eggs anyways...  If Ripley would have just had some self control... :)
