Re: Faith-based Fail

Two exceptions spring immediately to mind: "TRON" and "The Black
Hole," both of which I've watched recently. On the one hand, both
films are identifiably Disney-esque (chaste, simplistic
characterization, and somewhat pedestrian direction, offset by
top-tier production design and special-effects technology). But on the
other hand, neither film plays it safe or simplistic when it comes to
philosophy and theme. Both are fluffy-looking films with chewy nougat
centers.

Speaking of which, Joe Kosinski (director of "TRON Legacy") is helming
a remake of "The Black Hole," and this is one remake I can really get
behind. The original film made an indelible print on my brain*, and
holds a strong nostalgia factor for me. But I recently bought the DVD,
and upon rewatching it, I recognize that the film is rather langorous,
the direction is flat, and the performances are... umm... well, the
less said, the better. But the *idea* is strong and rich with
possibility. I'm actually looking forward to this one.

hope they keep the design.

* This was the first time I'd seen "The Black Hole" since I was
probably seven or eight, and I was shocked to realize that the film
was the inspiration for a recurring nightmare that I suffered
throughout my adolescence. Weird that I never made the connection.
