I saw the 1985 Hoffman / Malkovich version in university and remember 
liking it a lot -- not just for the performances, but for the interesting 
blend of theatrical and cinematic techniques.

It's been over two decades since I saw it, though, so I couldn't tell you 
*what* the exact blend of techniques *was*.
