So...  When I plug my cell phone (an HTC Hero) into my laptop and turn off 
the wi-fi on both machines, I find that my laptop can connect to the 
internet through my phone's mobile network... at least when I'm using the 
browser.  But when I try to connect to my e-mail at UBC using PuTTy (the 
program I've been using ever since UBC stopped accepting Telnet 
connections), the laptop tells me it can't connect.  Any idea what might 
be behind this difference (i.e. why the browser works but PuTTy doesn't)?
