No it isn't vengeance at least it doesn't have to be by definition. It is indeed retribution but that is a very different thing. And there all sorts of value it provides to society the most fundamental being the deterrence that that individual will ever harm anyone again. Life imprisonment is no guarantee of that, one need look no further than MSNBC weekend programming to see that. The cost in safety that the guards in a maximum security prison housing prisoners with nothing to lose should not be ignored. The death penalty in such a case is just punishment. The economics argument is irrelevant and probably in the current state of appellate law weighs in favor or life imprisonment so don't attribute that one to me. Of course, as that's precisely what it is. It serves no useful social purpose, neither as a deterrent nor as an implementation of justice. It *is* more economical than imprisonment, but that's not the same as being useful (and, at any rate, the question of economics has no place in a debate about taking human life).
