I agree with your last point, but not with the former. Please show how
the death penalty has served a useful social purpose. (To be clear,
this would need to be a purpose that is not also served by
imprisonment.)

**well I think you need to demonstrate that it does not as well.  I see the two
as linked, with the DP being reserved for the most heinous and life for the
others.  Not to mention that the dp as a possible consequence does actually
compel the guilty to confess and provide families full closure in exchange for
life.
