>I don't know what planet you're on where you'd expect the police to
possibly shoot a burglar. We had an instance like that here in Omaha a
few years ago, and the officer was fired and the city was sued. Just
as a surgeon has knives at his disposal, and I suppose it's *possible*
that he could start randomly carving up a patient's internal organs
willy-nilly, nobody goes into surgery thinking, "Well, that's is a
possibility..."<

You're notion of this is very naive.  Working backwards the surgeon analogy is
ludicrous - surgeons are NOT trained to use knives to prevent people from
committing crime or hurting other people they aren't trained to use knives as
weapons at all and they aren't required to carry them around with them at all
times.  IOW the possibility of *intentionally* shooting and/or killing someone
is not part of the job description for surgeons, it most definitely is for
police and the failure to do so could be considered a dereliction of duty in
some circumstances.

Police otoh are trained with guns to shoot at people to wound and kill them -
that is considered part of their job.  They, most departments, are required, and
if not required, encouraged and certainly allowed, to carry a gun with them when
they are off duty.

Finally, are burglaries the only reason people break into homes?  The very case
I cited was far more than a burglary ;how about the Elizabeth Smart case,
currently in the news again?  Or are you saying you would only call 911 if
you knew that the only reason the person was breaking in was to burglarize your
house?  Of course that leaves aside the question of how you could ever know that
in the first place.  I suppose you could call down the stairs or hall and ask:
"are you hear to burglarize me?  If you are I'm calling the police because they
shouldn't' shoot or kill you then, (which would in effect be a lie, police are
authorized to use deadly force during a felony - they may get scrutinized for it
after but that isn't much help to the felon they shoot), but if you're here to
rape or hurt me or my family I won't call them because they might shoot and kill
you."

Seriously, have you thought this through at all Paul?
