I note that you raised the example of how to talk to children using this language. I'd also note that none of us here are children. I see/saw the difference but I really think we are playing semantic, and childish, games to split hairs this way. No one likes to have their morality question or held in contempt and I'm just being honest when I say that was what was hearing/reading a lot of at the outset of the death penalty thing. To be fair, I suppose my initial post on the thing may have been a little smug, but that is only because my morality is better than yours. ; - ) The other thing I need to do and wish that we all would/could was to imagine how you would take the same things said in writing if said face to face. I firmly believe that face to face interaction, in most cases, mitigates what otherwise appear to be very harsh things. I can envision having this same discussion with you over a beer, with you saying many of the same things and not being offended. I hope you can do the same.
