Oh, I don't think so. Villains are *supposed* to lie, so that wouldn't
really have been a "twist," would it? I think it was pretty gutsy and
unexpected to go through with it. I know that, at least among my
circle of little friends, everyone figured it would be exposed as a
lie in the third film.

I think I've lived with the films for so long, and they're so embedded
in the cultural consciousness, that I sometimes take for granted how
stunning it was for the writers to have taken one of the screen's most
ruthless and iconic villains, and not only made him sympathetic at the
last minute, but even completely redeemed him. It was a pretty neat
trick.
