Well, let's not confuse the issues here.  In Empire, the movie that turned 
Vader into Luke's father, Luke's sister and Princess Leia were still two 
different characters.  It wasn't until they wrote Jedi that Lucas, who was 
getting tired of Star Wars and didn't want to do any more sequels, decided 
to merge the two characters so he didn't have to introduce the sister.
