Well, everyone involved in making the films agrees that Luke's sister was
*not* Leia when they made Empire but, rather, was someone else who had
been hidden on some distant planet.  This is why, among other things, Yoda
knows about the "other" and Obi-Wan doesn't.  It is also difficult to
fathom that Lucas would have let Luke and Leia kiss multiple times (only
one of those scenes survived the cutting-room floor, though) if he had
always intended to reveal that they were actually twin siblings.

Yes, I remember many people assuming between '80 and '83 that Leia must
have been the "other", simply because Luke called out to her.  But then,
was there any reason to assume that people strong in the Force could
*only* communicate with other people strong in the Force?

Actually, the "revelation" in Jedi that Leia, too, was one of Darth
Vader's children came as a real surprise to me.

  In the original Star
Wars, it was implied that the Force was something anyone could train to be
strong in; certainly there was nothing about Luke that indicated he was
particularly strong in the Force *before* Obi-Wan started training him.
It wasn't until Return of the Jedi that Force-strength became a *genetic*
thing -- and it wasn't until the prequels that a *mechanism* for the
genetic transmission of Force-strength was first proposed.
