Well, a ping-pong ball *does* have mass and therefore does exert a
gravitational force.  The analogy would be valid because they do share
that particular aspect in common.  It would "fail" because using such
small objects isn't very illustrative.

*now imagining the tidal forces exerted on a wet baseball by a nearby golf ball*
