I found it an interesting tale to say the least. It is told in reverse
chronological, which meant that for the first two thirds there were
some big reveals, the last third petered out a bit as it went into his
childhood.

So the story/history is as follows....

**spoilers thus ensue...***

Just before the attack on Haven Book is talking to the people about
how awesome the crew are, the attack comes and he is shot.
/flashback/ to serenity. A cup of water everyone is so nice, oops Mal
has a guy in a headlock with a gun to his head. book goes of to pray.
/flashback/ Praying as to where he should go - meets Kaylee
/flashback /he's a beaten up bum (from a guy who knew someone in the
alliance army) , goes to a soup kitchen and has an epiphany, seeks a
church
/flashback/ At a court marshall where, his decisions cost the lives of
10,000 alliance soldiers in an attempt book says would have ended the
war in one day.
/flashback/ Book is a head in the military in the war.
/flashback/ Book is a browncoat in a meeting where the plan is to have
someone infiltrate the military and sabotage the war efforts, he
volunteers
/flashback/ A street kid Book is recruited by the browncoats
/flashback/ Has an abusive dad and leaves home to be on the streets.
