Depends...the Bible talks about not giving offense to the Gospel (in spite of the popular "The GOSPEL is offensive" defense). How do we do that?
Look, I get it. Sometime you cannot avoid offending people. And yeah, nobody has a right to never being offended. I never have said otherwise in this entire conversation. My favorite comedian to this day is the late Bill Hicks. And boy did he piss people off. Some of his best performances are when the audience turned on him. He didn't care and would tear into his audience. I love his story about a Christian coming up after a show. The guy said he was a Christian and found Hick's act offensive.
His response? "So, forgive me!"
I am a staunch fan of Lewis Black. And I like David Cross. Pretty much all my favorite comedians offend regularly. But here is the thing...I appreciate that it's their ideas that offend.
Paul, you used the comparison of being a Christian offended by people using God/Christ's name profanely. But the difference between that and a person with a handicap or a gay person? Religion is a choice. The others are not. Plus? Nobody uses "God" or "Jesus Christ" as insults. They use them as expletives. Nobody says, "That's so God!" Or "You are such a Jesus Christ!"
Offend with ideas. Please! I am all for that.
