About Al Gore and Those Ethanol Subsidies

I've seen a lot of essays this week such as this one about Al Gore's 
recent statement in Athens to the effect that ethanol subsidies are a bad 
idea. This position isn't actually new. Gore said in his book "Our Choice" 
last year that ethanol was "a mistake" and admitted at the time that he 
supported ethanol because of the political influence of farmers in 
Tennessee and Iowa -- a state where he needed to be popular when he ran 
for president. It's all in my column of November 8, 2009:

     Gore is so sure of himself, having won a prize awarded annually by 
some Scandinavians to the most prominent ideological opponent of George W. 
Bush, that he occasionally slips up. There is an extraordinary moment of 
candor when Gore says that in the mid-'90s, as vice president, he cast the 
tie-breaking vote in the Senate to push the disastrous boondoggle of 
subsidies for corn-based ethanol (he labels ethanol, in a laughable 
understatement, "a mistake" and "a disappointment") because of "my 
political desire to help the farm economy in Tennessee and Iowa."
