The ex-friend is going nuts again. Do I dare open the thread in question? Note: it's a thread I had studiously avoided for over a year, precisely because it was impossible to discuss a certain movie rationally with him. And I consciously avoided saying anything in that thread -- heck, I consciously avoided even *reading* that thread -- even though I really, really wanted to challenge one of his assertions about that film. But, the other day, someone revived the thread, and I figured enough time had passed that some sort of quasi-rational critique might work ... and now, after being away from the computer most of the day, I see that the ex-friend in question has gone and given the thread a new subheading which suggests he's getting hysterical again, and trying to shout other people down through the sheer force of his hysteria. This, incidentally, comes a few weeks after he made some dubious remark about Jacob wrestling the Angel and asking for a blessing and being given a *wound* as a blessing. Um, well, no, that ain't how it goes in Genesis. Rather, *first* the stranger (who may or may not be an angel and/or God) injures (not wounds) Jacob because Jacob is winning their little wrestling match, and then Jacob asks for a blessing, and then, *after* the stranger gives Jacob a name, the stranger goes on to bless him as well. At the time, it seemed to me that the ex-friend was just recycling something that some hipster poet or musician or preacher or something had said in an attempt to sound profound. I didn't say this, though; I just posted a quick fact-check. But, sure enough, when the ex-friend responded, he said he was just passing along something beautiful that he had heard... and now he was going to "clarify" what he meant, and he wasn't going to get into an "argument". As if there was anything to argue about here. And I love how the closest this guy ever gets to admitting he made an error is to say that he's "clarifying" what he said, when in fact he is actually *changing* what he said (and sometimes, as in this case, deleting his original post in the process). Sigh. And now my two-year-old is screaming in the other room ... -- dadl-ot mailing list http://mail.thehood.us/mailman/listinfo/dadl-ot_thehood.us http://news.gmane.org/gmane.music.dadl.ot
